At the front entrance to our school we have the most inviting display cabinet. Every month, it is decorated with a new theme in line with the seasonal and academic calendar.
October’s display was a Cornucopia of wonder inspired by nature; a stone carved moon here, sleeping bats, and block prints of paddles dipping into the rippling water. Designed and installed by Dana Buchbinder Citizen Science Program Manager at EcoSpark, the vignettes and dioramas invitingly showed you ways to embrace the outdoors through art and stories.
We asked Dana about her installation:
“It was a fun project gathering ideas and materials from the community. The idea was to celebrate Waldorf Academy's commitment to outdoor learning, and to remind all of us how beneficial it is to spend time in nature. As an environmental scientist and outdoor educator, I've seen how nature connection supports both people and conservation. Outdoor activities from the classes here include everything from handwork with animal inspiration to exploring the elements with Kelly Kettles to land-based learning such as maple syrup days, culminating in camping/canoeing trips in the middle school. Nature is always the first teacher, and we are lucky to have resources from so many (Indigenous naturalists, libraries, park groups, and the land themself) to support our lifelong learning.”
Thank you Ms. Buchbinder! We are looking forward to seeing what’s in store for next month’s display!
