Waldorf Academy: First-in-Class
What does ‘applied’ and ‘holistic’ education really mean anyway?
Finding the right independent school in Toronto that is the best fit for your child can be an overwhelming task. With the variety of options available, it is important to consider factors such as curriculum, location, and level of community engagement.
But most importantly, the key is to find an environment where your child loves coming to school every day, and where your child’s inner development is nurtured alongside their educational progress.
Waldorf Academy’s mission is to create an inspired learning environment; develop and maintain a profound understanding of the whole child - head, heart, and hands; foster healthy relationships among students, parents, and teachers; and attract highly capable, dedicated, and skilled educators who have a passion for learning as well as teaching.
At Waldorf Academy, we offer a rich array of academic subjects, hands-on work, foreign language, sports, trips and theatre, all of which nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.
Grades 7 & 8 memorizing the Periodic Table through song
Waldorf Academy is known for its unique educational philosophy that emphasizes a rich academic syllabus and holistic development through experiential learnings offered in low-tech settings. The curriculum prioritizes outdoor experiences, environmental stewardship, the use of natural materials.
“The school atmosphere is joyful and welcoming, and artfully blends academic classroom structure with flexibility and fun.” - Waldorf Parent
For example:
Grade 1 students love how their teachers use stories, movement, and song to teach math.
Our Grade 3 class recently built StopGap accessibility ramps for several local businesses as part of an academic unit on weight and measurement.
A Grade 5 highlight is learning how to throw the javelin and discus for the annual Greek Olympiad with fellow students from several nearby Waldorf schools as they learn about Greek Civilization.
Middle schoolers learn the “why” not just the “what” of rebellions revolutions, and social justice movements.
Grade 7 students memorize the Periodic table through music.
Grade 8 students look forward to their famed Independent Projects on topics of their choice combining a myriad of interests (e.g., animation, the history of chocolate, 3D printing, canoe-making, etc).
Graduates of Waldorf Academy enter their next phase of learning with confidence and self awareness. Our students go to high schools such as Royal St. George’s, Bishop Strachan, and Rosedale Heights, and choose a wide diversity of professions and occupations including medicine, law, science, engineering, computer technology, the arts, social science, government, and teaching at all levels. Notable Waldorf graduates include violin-playing astronaut Sarah Gillis, actor Jennifer Aniston, and former President of Norway and NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.
