This morning, students learned to lift their back thumb off of the flute to make a new note. In grade one, we are continuing to work on learning songs on the pentatonic flute. Stories are told to introduce new songs and flute fingerings. We’re also learning a song called “John Kanakanaka” that incorporates singing and body percussion.

Music is an essential part of children’s education and singing is a time when even quite individual children feel ‘one with the class.’ Studies have shown that children who study a musical instrument improve in what they are learning at school.
